RUNNING ERRANDS AND SEEING MORE FRIENDS

BACK IN HELLERUP
2010

I grew up in the area where the hotel is situated and can still move around with a certain amount of confidence. The language has changed a lot, however, and my spoken Danish sounds overly refined and old-fashioned. I know this, but fortunately cannot hear it. At least people speak back to me in the same language!
After enjoying a little breakfast in my room with delicacies purchased yesterday, I find a bus that takes me all the way to Vesterbrogade near Tivoli gardens, where I have an appointment, Afterwards I stroll back past the Halloween decorated entrance to Tivoli (I have NEVER seen this before), across Rådhuspladsen, where a thermometer is showing 6 degrees Celcius, and down the famous boutique-lined walking street Strøget, passing many landmarks from my youth, including the famous pastry baker, La Glace, which still displays the most exquisite layer cakes filled with flavored creams and fluffy whipped cream. In and out of shops I meander along until I realize I need to have lunch and find an old favorite, Café Sommersko (summer shoes), where I have a smoked salmon sandwich served on homemade grain ciabatta drizzled with pesto - and a cool glass of Carlsberg, of course. Then some more walking, but it is cold, and I begin to think longingly of my cozy room at the hotel. I find the same bus and drive back through my old haunts, noticing both familiar sights like the welter of bikes outside the train stations, but also huge new developments with luxury apartments and shopping areas, where in my time lay the Tuborg breweries.
I rest in my room for an hour and then walk 2 blocks along Strandvejen to where my friend Sonja and her husband Hans Henrik have just moved into a great apartment with the most spectacular view of the sound. We look at and appreciate everything they have done to their place and then move to the next-door building, where their friends Birthe and Henrik, all four of whom visited us in Brazil in January, have an equally lovely apartment. It is very cozy, as the Danes say, to sit in their well-appointed kitchen and share a delicious and elegant dinner.
